Love’s a Result, Not a Starting Point

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

July 12th Sermon, Day 2

We often treat love like a switch we can flip. Just decide to love people and move on. But if you have ever tried to force yourself to feel warmth toward someone who has hurt you, you know it does not work that way.

Paul wrote to Timothy that love flows from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. That is a significant statement. Love is not the starting point. It is the result of something deeper happening on the inside. This is actually good news. It means you are not failing because you cannot conjure up loving feelings toward a difficult person. It means the real work happens at a deeper level, in the heart, where only God can truly reach.

When Jesus transforms a heart, He reshapes desires and renews the mind. Kindness begins to show up not because you are trying harder, but because something has genuinely changed on the inside. That is not behavior modification. That is heart transformation. So if you are struggling to love someone right now, do not start by gritting your teeth and trying harder. Start by asking God to do the deeper work. Invite Him into the places in your heart that still carry hurt, resentment, or pride. That is where real change begins, and He is more than willing to meet you there.

Bible Verse

"The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith." - 1 Timothy 1:5

Reflection Question

Is there an area of your heart where you have been trying to change your behavior without allowing God to address the root issue underneath it?

Quote

"Love isn't the starting point here. It's actually the result. He said, listen, you can't just conjure up loving people. Love actually grows. It grows out of something deeper."

Prayer

Father, I cannot change myself from the outside in. Do the deeper work in my heart today. Cleanse what needs to be cleansed and renew what needs to be renewed, so that love can flow naturally from who You are making me to be. Amen.
