Generosity Is A Way of Life

October 11th Sermon, Day 5

We often think of generosity as something we do with our wallets. But generosity is so much bigger than that. It shows up in how we spend our time, how we offer our attention, how we share our talents, and even how we let go of the need to be recognized or in control. You can be financially generous and still hold tightly to your schedule, your energy, or your need to be right. True generosity touches every part of who we are. Think about the people in your life who feel the most life-giving to be around. Chances are, they are generous in ways that go far beyond money. They are present. They listen. They show up. They give of themselves freely, and it changes the atmosphere around them.

That is the kind of life God is inviting us into. Not just a bigger donation, but a bigger posture. Hands open. Heart available. Trust firmly placed in a God who promises to provide. As you close out this week, take a moment to ask God where He might be inviting you to take one concrete step of generosity. It might be financial. It might be your time, your words, or your willingness to release control. Whatever it is, take the step. Not because the numbers add up, but because you trust the One who holds it all. You were made to live this way, and it is more freeing than you might expect.

Bible Verse

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" - Hebrews 13:5

Reflection Question

Beyond finances, where is God calling you to be more generous with your time, attention, or energy, and what is one specific step you can take this week?

Quote

"Generosity extends far beyond our wealth or what we own."

Prayer

Lord, make me generous in every area of my life, not just with my money, but with my time, my presence, and my heart. I trust You as my provider, and I want to live with open hands. Amen.

Open Hands Start With a Trusting Heart

October 11th Sermon, Day 4

Why is generosity so hard sometimes? Often, it is not because we do not want to give. It is because giving feels risky. What if we need that later? What if there is not enough? Underneath a closed fist is almost always a fearful heart. When we look to our possessions for security, letting go of them feels like a threat. The more we believe our peace depends on what we have, the harder it becomes to share what we have. Fear quietly shapes our decisions more than we realize.

But here is the good news. Open hands are not the starting point. Trust is. When we genuinely believe that God is our provider, that He will never leave us or forsake us, something loosens in us. We no longer have to hold everything together ourselves. We can release what we have been gripping tightly because we know who holds us. This is not about giving recklessly or ignoring wisdom. It is about asking an honest question: Is fear driving this decision, or is faith? That question can change everything. God is not asking you to be fearless. He is asking you to trust Him more than you trust your safety net. And He has proven, again and again, that He is faithful enough to be trusted with everything you have.

Bible Verse

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" - Hebrews 13:5

Reflection Question

Where in your life is fear shaping your decisions more than faith, and what would it look like to take one step of trust in that area this week?

Quote

"When we look to money and possessions for our security, we will inevitably struggle to let them go."

Prayer

Father, show me where fear has been louder than faith in my life. I want to trust You more than I trust what I can see and hold. Help me open my hands because I believe You are enough. Amen.

She Did A Beautiful Thing

October 11th Sermon, Day 3

Imagine the scene. A woman walks into a room, breaks open a jar of perfume worth nearly a year's wages, and pours every drop of it over Jesus. No hesitation. No calculation. Just love, poured out completely. The people around her were outraged. They called it wasteful. But Jesus stopped them and said something remarkable: "She has done a beautiful thing to me."

Jesus was not impressed by the most strategic gift in the room. He was moved by a heart so full of love that it gave without holding back. He was not looking for fine wisdom or balanced judgment. He was looking for uncalculating devotion. That challenges us, does it not? Most of us are wired to be practical. We weigh the pros and cons. We ask if it makes sense. And while wisdom has its place, there are moments when God is not asking us to calculate. He is asking us to respond. Generosity rooted in love looks different from generosity rooted in obligation. One feels like a burden. The other feels like freedom. The woman with the alabaster jar was not giving out of duty. She was giving because she loved Jesus deeply, and that love overflowed. What might it look like for your generosity to look less like a transaction and more like an act of love?

Bible Verse

"While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, 'Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year's wages and the money given to the poor.' And they rebuked her harshly. 'Leave her alone,' said Jesus. 'Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.'" - Mark 14:3-6

Reflection Question

When you give, whether your time, money, or energy, does it feel more like an obligation to fulfill or an overflow of love? What might need to change for it to feel more like the latter?

Quote

"Jesus isn't looking for us to make the most reasonable, calculated or practical choice every time. He's looking for hearts so moved by love that we're willing to give extravagantly, even when it doesn't make sense to the world or it even doesn't make sense to ourselves."

Prayer

Jesus, I want my generosity to come from a heart that loves You deeply, not from a sense of duty or guilt. Teach me what it means to give beautifully, the way she did. Amen.

What Money Was Never Meant To Give You

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

October 11th Sermon, Day 2

We live in a world that quietly promises us that more will finally be enough. More income, more savings, more security. And yet, if we are honest, most of us have reached a goal we once thought would bring peace, only to find ourselves already chasing the next one. Solomon was one of the wealthiest people who ever lived, and he wrote with striking honesty that whoever loves money is never satisfied.

That is not just ancient wisdom. It is something we feel in our own lives. Here is what money and possessions were never designed to do: they cannot give you identity, lasting security, or deep satisfaction. They are good gifts, but they are not God. When we expect them to carry a weight they were never built to hold, we end up anxious, striving, and never quite at rest. Jesus was direct about this. You cannot serve both God and money. Not because money is evil, but because divided loyalty leaves us restless. When God becomes our true source, something shifts. We stop white-knuckling what we have and start holding it with open hands. You were made for more than the endless pursuit of enough. You were made for the peace that only God can provide.

Bible Verse

"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." - Matthew 6:24

Reflection Question

In what ways have you been looking to money or possessions to provide something that only God can truly give you?

Quote

"There's nothing wrong with enjoying vacations or good food or success or beautiful things. Nothing wrong with that. The problem comes when we expect those things to give us the identity, the security, the significance, and the satisfaction that they, in all of what they are, were never designed to provide us."

Prayer

God, reveal the places where I have trusted in what I own more than in who You are. Shift my heart toward You as my true source of security and satisfaction. Amen.

The Finish Line That Keeps Moving

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

October 11th Sermon, Day 1

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, "I'll be more generous once things settle down"? Maybe once the kids are older, once the debt is paid off, or once life feels a little less chaotic. It sounds reasonable. But here is the honest truth: the finish line keeps moving. There is always another bill, another season of uncertainty, another reason to wait.

Life does not slow down the way we hope it will. The busyness just changes shape. And while we are waiting for the perfect moment, we can miss what God is inviting us into right now. God does not call us to generosity someday. He calls us to it today, with what we already have, in the season we are already in. That is not a burden. It is actually a gift. It means you do not have to wait until everything is figured out to live with an open hand. You are not behind.

You are not disqualified because your resources feel limited or your life feels messy. God meets us exactly where we are and invites us to trust Him with what we have right now. This week, let that truth sink in. The best time to live generously is not later. It is now.

Bible Verse

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" - Hebrews 13:5

Reflection Question

What is one area of your life where you have been waiting for the "right time" to be more generous, and what would it look like to take one small step today instead?

Quote

"The finish line keeps moving. There's always another bill to pay, always another thing to save for, always another reason to hold back."

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I have put off generosity while waiting for a better moment. Help me trust that You are enough right now, and give me the courage to live with open hands today. Amen.
