WHY SHOULD I GET BAPTIZED?
We are called to be baptized because Jesus was baptized, and he told everyone who follows him to be baptized. Are you following Jesus? Then baptism is where you start showing that he is your leader. Some people might question the need to do anything more than to decide in your mind to follow Christ. But baptism is a public act where you declare to everyone that you belong to Jesus.
WHAT DOES BAPTISM LOOK LIKE?
A pastor or staff member or small group leader will ask you if you are a follower of Jesus Christ and then will baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit by lowering you under the water and bringing you back up!
WHAT DOES BAPTISM DO IN MY HEART?
For one thing, baptism humbles us. Humility was the core of baptism for the first followers of Jesus who were baptized by John, “Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River...” (Matthew 3:6). Baptism also symbolizes Jesus' death, burial and resurrection. Under the water you are proclaiming Jesus is Lord and that he has made is possible for you to die to sin. When you are raised up from the water, you are proclaiming that you are resurrected to live for God.
WHAT SHOULD I DO TO BE BAPTIZED?
Confess your shortcomings and sins to God. And then repent of your sins and begin to sincerely follow Jesus' example and commands. As Jesus said, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (Matthew 3:2).
WILL ANYTHING SPIRITUAL HAPPEN IN MY BAPTISM?
Yes! The Holy Spirit does a work in those humbling themselves through baptism. It’s just like the first Christians were told, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38). Most people find that baptism is a moving and emotional event of surrender to God.
SHOULD I WAIT UNTIL MY LIFE IMPROVES A BIT BEFORE I GET BAPTIZED?
Don’t wait to be baptized. If you have confessed Jesus as your Lord and believe in your heart he is alive, then be baptized as soon as possible. The first Christians were baptized as soon as they began to follow Jesus Christ. Not feeling worthy of baptism is one of the evidences that you are ready to be baptized. You aren’t trusting in yourself. You are believing in Christ.
