Hard Pressed But Not Crushed

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

August 9th Sermon, Day 2

Life can feel like it is closing in from every direction. Maybe you are dealing with a health scare, a broken relationship, financial pressure, or a grief that just will not lift. If that is where you are right now, you are in good company. Paul knew that feeling well. He was beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked, and constantly in danger. And yet he wrote some of the most hope-filled words in all of Scripture. He did not pretend the hard things were not hard. He named them honestly: hard pressed, perplexed, persecuted, struck down. But he refused to let those realities have the final word.

After every hardship, he declared a truth that suffering could not erase: not crushed, not in despair, not abandoned, not destroyed. That is not denial. That is faith. Faith does not pretend the pain is not real. It simply insists that God is more real than the pain. It holds both truths at the same time and chooses to anchor itself to the One who does not change. Whatever you are facing today, you are not crushed. You are not abandoned. God has not left the building. He is right there with you in the middle of it, and His presence changes everything.

Bible Verse

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." - 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Reflection Question

Which of Paul's four contrasts (hard pressed but not crushed, perplexed but not in despair, persecuted but not abandoned, struck down but not destroyed) speaks most directly to what you are walking through right now, and why?

Quote

Faith doesn't eliminate suffering, but faith changes how suffering affects us.

Prayer

Father, when life presses in from every side, remind me that Your presence is greater than my pressure. Help me hold onto hope even when I cannot see the way forward. Amen.
