More Than A Glance

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

October 18th Sermon, Day 1

It is easy to notice someone hurting and keep moving. We see the need, we feel a moment of concern, and then life pulls us forward. But there is a real difference between noticing and responding. In Deuteronomy 15, God gave His people a direct command. He did not say, "Be aware of the poor among you." He said to open your hand. To act. To respond.

This was not a suggestion tucked into a long list of rules. It was a reflection of who God is and how He had already treated His people. Because He had been generous toward them, they were called to be generous toward others. That same invitation is extended to us today. When you encounter someone in need, whether it is a neighbor going through a hard season, a coworker carrying a heavy load, or a stranger who crosses your path, God is not asking you to simply feel bad for them. He is asking you to do something. You do not have to have all the answers. You do not have to fix everything. But you can take one step. You can show up. You can respond. God has been incredibly generous toward you. That generosity is meant to move through you, not just stay with you. Today is a great day to let it.

Bible Verse

"If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them." - Deuteronomy 15:7

Reflection Question

When you encounter someone in need, what is the first thing that typically happens inside you, and what usually determines whether you act or walk away?

Quote

"Seeing a need and responding to a need are two really different things."

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the countless ways You have responded to my needs with grace and generosity. Give me eyes to truly see the people around me, and the courage to move from seeing to doing. Amen.
