It Was Never Yours
Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church
October 18th Sermon, Day 2
When things are going well, it is tempting to look at what we have and think, "I worked hard for this. I earned it." And while hard work matters, honest reflection tells a different story. Your abilities came from somewhere. Your opportunities were shaped by circumstances you did not fully control. Your health, your mind, your time, none of it was self-generated. When you trace it all the way back, everything you have is a gift from God.
This is not meant to minimize your effort. It is meant to shift your perspective. Because when you recognize that God is the source of everything you have, it changes how tightly you hold onto it. There is a real difference between ownership and stewardship. Ownership says, "This is mine to protect." Stewardship says, "God, You have entrusted this to me. How do You want me to use it?" That shift in thinking is where generosity begins. Not in your bank account, but in your heart. When you stop seeing your resources as things to guard and start seeing them as tools God has placed in your hands, you become free to use them for others. You are not just a holder of good things. You are a channel for them. And that is a far more meaningful way to live.
Bible Verse
"Rather be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need." - Deuteronomy 15:8
Reflection Question
In what area of your life (time, money, talents, or energy) do you tend to think more like an owner than a steward, and what might it look like to hold that area more loosely?
Quote
"That’s the difference between ownership and stewardship. Ownership says, what I have, it’s mine. Stewardship says God, you’ve entrusted this to me. How do you want me to use it?"
Prayer
Father, remind me today that everything I have comes from You. Loosen my grip on what I call mine, and help me to see it all as Yours, entrusted to me for Your purposes. Amen.
