When Life Overwhelms Our Faith
Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church
April 5th Sermon, Day 1
Picture the women walking to Jesus' tomb that Sunday morning, carrying spices to anoint his body. Their hearts were heavy with grief, their minds clouded by confusion. These weren't casual followers - they were devoted, faithful women who had courageously stayed when others scattered. Yet in their overwhelming sorrow, they had forgotten something crucial: Jesus had told them exactly what would happen.
We often find ourselves in similar places. Life hits us with unexpected challenges, disappointments, or losses, and suddenly the promises of God feel distant. We don't intentionally reject what Jesus has said, but the weight of our circumstances can make his words seem foggy or irrelevant. The bills pile up, relationships strain, health concerns mount, and we forget that our Savior has already spoken into these very situations.
These faithful women teach us that even devoted followers can lose sight of God's promises when overwhelmed. Their story isn't meant to shame us but to encourage us - if God could meet them in their forgetfulness and redirect their hearts, he can do the same for us. Today, whatever is weighing on your heart, remember that your circumstances don't change God's character or cancel his promises.
Bible Verse
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then they remembered his words. Luke 24:1-8
Reflection Question
What overwhelming circumstances in your life right now might be causing you to forget God's promises?
Quote
We don't usually reject Jesus’ words outright. We can just forget them, especially when life gets a little overwhelming.
Prayer
Lord, when life feels overwhelming and your promises seem distant, help me remember your faithfulness. Give me the grace to trust your word even when my circumstances tell a different story.
