Love That Goes Against the Grain

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

July 12th Sermon, Day 1

Think about the last time someone wronged you. Maybe it was a cutting remark, a betrayal, or just someone being flat-out unkind. What was your first instinct? If you are honest, it probably was not to pray for them. Jesus does not sugarcoat how hard this is. He simply calls us to it anyway. In Matthew 5:44, He tells us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. Not pray that they get what is coming to them. Genuine prayer. Prayers asking for God's best in their lives. That kind of love feels impossible because, honestly, it is impossible on our own.

Culture tells us to clap back, to protect our pride, to make sure people know they cannot treat us that way. Jesus points us in a completely different direction. Here is the encouraging part: He is not asking you to manufacture something you do not have. He is inviting you into a different way of living, one that is powered by something far greater than your own willpower.

You do not have to figure this out alone. You just have to be willing to take the first step toward it. This week, we are going to explore what it actually looks like to love people who are hard to love. Not as a self-improvement project, but as a response to what God has already done for us.

Bible Verse

"But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." - Matthew 5:44

Reflection Question

When someone wrongs you, what does your default response reveal about where you are placing your trust?

Quote

"Every day you and I are faced with a choice. We can respond to people the way they treat us, or we can respond to them the way Jesus has treated us."

Prayer

Lord, soften my heart toward the people I find hardest to love. Help me to see them the way You see them, and give me the courage to take one small step in that direction today. Amen.

One Act of Grace Can Change Everything

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

July 5th Sermon, Day 5

As we close out this week, here is a question worth sitting with. Who have you stopped praying for? Who have you quietly given up on? Maybe it is someone whose behavior has worn you down. Maybe it is a relationship that feels too far gone. But if you ever think someone is too angry, too far from God, or too set in their ways to change, remember Paul. He was a man who hunted down Christians and had them killed. And God transformed Him completely.

Nobody is too far gone when God is involved. You may never fully know what one act of grace can accomplish. One kind word spoken at the right moment. One prayer offered for someone who has hurt you. One patient response when you had every right to lash out. These things ripple outward in ways you cannot see or measure. Kindness creates curiosity. Grace creates conversations. Mercy builds bridges between people who seemed too far apart to ever connect.

This week, you have been reminded that you were loved before you deserved it, that grace is meant to be given away, that kindness wins people when arguments cannot, and that you have the strength to break cycles that have gone on far too long. Now go live it. Someone in your life is waiting to see Jesus through you, and they may not even know it yet.

Bible Verse

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God." - Ephesians 2:8

Reflection Question

Who is one person in your life right now who needs to see Jesus through you, and what is one specific, practical thing you can do this week to show them unexpected grace?

Quote

"You may never know what one act of grace can accomplish. One kind word, one patient response, one sincere prayer."

Prayer

Father, thank You for the grace that found me when I was far from You. Give me eyes to see the people around me who need that same grace, and give me the courage to offer it freely. Amen.

Courage To Break The Cycle

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

July 5th Sermon, Day 4

Bitterness has a way of feeding itself. Someone hurts you, you pull back or strike back, they respond in kind, and the cycle keeps going. It can last years. Sometimes it lasts generations. Somebody has to stop it. Here is something worth holding onto today. The person who breaks the cycle is not the weak one. They are actually the stronger person. It takes far more strength to extend grace than to retaliate.

Retaliation is easy. Grace costs something. One act of kindness, even a small one, can interrupt years of bitterness in ways that revenge never could. A kind word. A patient response. A sincere prayer for someone who has wronged you. These things carry more power than they appear to. Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. You do not overcome evil by becoming more evil. You overcome it by doing good.

That is exactly what Jesus demonstrated, and it is exactly what He is inviting you into. You may feel like the cycle is too entrenched, too old, too deep to break. But one act of grace has a way of changing the atmosphere in a relationship, a family, or even a community. You do not have to fix everything today. You just have to take one step toward grace. That step matters more than you know.

Bible Verse

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." - Romans 12:21

Reflection Question

Where in your life is a cycle of hurt or bitterness continuing, and what is one small act of grace you could offer this week to begin interrupting it?

Quote

"The one who breaks the cycle is actually the stronger person. I want you to know that today because I think sometimes we think if I extend forgiveness, that makes me look weak."

Prayer

Lord, give me the strength to be the one who breaks the cycle. Help me to choose grace when everything in me wants to retaliate, trusting that Your way is better than mine. Amen.

Winning People, Not Arguments

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

July 5th Sermon, Day 3

There is a temptation that is especially strong right now. It is the temptation to be right. To win the debate. To score the point. And honestly, sometimes it feels justified, especially when someone has been unkind or unfair to you. But here is the hard truth. You can win an argument and lose a person at the same time. You can be completely correct and still push someone further from Jesus in the process.

Paul understood this tension deeply. He had every reason to argue, to defend himself, to fight back. Instead, his heart was fixed on one question: how can they come to know Jesus? That question changed everything about how he responded to opposition. Kindness does something that a perfectly crafted argument never can. It creates curiosity.

Grace opens doors that logic alone cannot unlock. When someone sees you respond to hostility with patience and genuine care, they start asking questions they did not know they had. Your goal was never to defeat the people around you. It is to see them redeemed. That shift in perspective, from winning to loving, is one of the most freeing things you can experience. You are not called to be a debater. You are called to be a witness. And the most compelling testimony is a life that looks like Jesus.

Bible Verse

"Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved." - Romans 10:1

Reflection Question

Is there a relationship in your life where you have been focused on being right rather than being redemptive? What would it look like to shift your goal from winning to loving?

Quote

"We can win debates and lose people, right? We can score points online, but actually push people farther away from Christ."

Prayer

God, forgive me for the times I have cared more about being right than about the person in front of me. Redirect my heart toward what actually matters: seeing people come to know You. Amen.

Grace We Did Not Earn

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

July 5th Sermon, Day 2

Think about this for a moment. God did not wait until you had your life together before He loved you. He did not hold off until you were kind enough, faithful enough, or good enough. He loved you while you were still walking away from Him. That is not a small thing.

That is the entire story of the gospel. When Jesus calls us to love our enemies, He is not asking us to do something He has not already done for us. He is inviting us to reflect the same grace that found us when we were at our worst. Every time you choose kindness over retaliation, you are putting that grace on display for someone who may never pick up a Bible but will absolutely read your life.

This is not about being a pushover. It is about being a mirror. When people see you respond to hostility with genuine kindness, they see something they cannot explain on their own. They see Jesus. You were loved before you deserved it. That love changed everything for you. Now imagine what it could do for someone else if they experienced even a small reflection of it through you. Grace is not something you earned. It is something you received. And the most natural response to receiving it is to give it away.

Bible Verse

"You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:43-45

Reflection Question

When you think about how God loved you before you deserved it, does that change how you see the person in your life who feels hardest to love right now?

Quote

"God never waited until we somehow became lovable. He loved us and he loves us even when we are his enemy. And that’s called grace."

Prayer

Father, thank You for loving me before I ever turned toward You. Give me the courage to extend that same undeserved grace to someone who needs to see it today. Amen.
