The Trap of Chasing Approval

Leah named her first three sons with one hope in mind: that Jacob would finally love her. Each name was a quiet prayer that this time, things would be different. This time, he would see her.

It is easy to judge that kind of striving until you recognize it in yourself. How often do we work harder, perform better, or change who we are just to earn someone's approval? And how often does it actually deliver the peace we were hoping for? Approval is a moving target. People's opinions shift. Circumstances change. Building your sense of worth on what others think of you is exhausting, and it never holds.

God, on the other hand, never changes. His love for you is not based on your performance. It is not withdrawn when you fail. Locating your identity in Him is not just a nice idea. It is the only foundation that will actually hold. You do not have to keep chasing. You are already seen. You are already loved. That is not something you earn. It is something you receive.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." - Romans 8:28

Reflection Question

Whose approval are you working hardest to earn right now, and how is that pursuit affecting your sense of peace?

"Approval is a terrible foundation for peace. Imagine trying to stand on a ladder that's leaning against a moving vehicle. Right? That's what happens when our peace depends on other people."

Prayer

God, I confess that I have looked to others to tell me I am enough. Teach me to receive my worth from You, and free me from the exhausting cycle of chasing approval. Amen.

Leah's life was painful in ways most of us can relate to. She was overlooked by her husband, used by her Father, and constantly compared to her sister. If anyone had reason to feel invisible, it was her. But Scripture tells us something that changes everything. When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, He enabled her to conceive. Her circumstances were hard. The people around her failed her. But God saw her completely.

That same truth applies to you today. Before anyone noticed you, God already did. Before anyone valued you, God already loved you. Before anyone called your name, God knew it. You may be in a season where you feel unseen. Maybe a relationship has left you feeling overlooked. Maybe you have poured yourself into something and received nothing in return. Take heart. The God who saw Leah in her pain sees you in yours. You are not invisible to Him. You never have been. And that changes everything about how you can face today.

Reflection Question

In what area of your life do you most need to believe that God truly sees you and has not forgotten you?

Prayer

Father, on the days I feel invisible or forgotten, remind me that You have always seen me. Help me find comfort and courage in knowing I am fully known and fully loved by You. Amen.

The Restless Heart

Have you ever reached something you worked hard for, only to feel strangely empty once you got there? Maybe it was a promotion, a relationship, or a long-awaited milestone. You expected to feel satisfied, but instead you felt a quiet, nagging sense that something was still missing. You are not alone. That feeling has a name. It is restlessness, and it is part of being human.

Centuries ago, Augustine captured it perfectly. He wrote that our hearts are restless until they rest in God. Not in achievements. Not in approval. Not in the next big thing. In God. We were not wired for stuff. We were not wired for status. We were wired for a relationship with our Creator. When we try to fill that space with anything else, it simply does not fit. The emptiness is not a flaw in you. It is actually an invitation pointing you toward the One who made you.

Here is the encouraging part: God is not frustrated with your searching. He understands it. And He is patiently waiting for you to turn toward Him, because He has been looking at you all along.

What is one thing you have been chasing, hoping it would finally bring you peace, and what would it look like to bring that longing to God instead?

Your Past Does Not Define You

July 26th Sermon, Day 5

There are things in your past that you wish you could undo. Decisions you regret. Words you cannot take back. Moments you replay when the room gets quiet. You know what they are. Here is what is true about those moments: they may explain parts of who you are, but they do not get to define who you are.

Your failures can humble you without imprisoning you. That is not wishful thinking. That is the gospel. Jesus still welcomes repentant sinners. He still cleanses guilty hearts. He still restores broken lives. And no one, not a single person, is beyond His grace. His sacrifice is sufficient for every sin, past, present, and future. That means it is truly done. Paid in full. Case closed.

Faith is not about convincing God to say yes to your forgiveness. It is about trusting what He has already said yes to. He said yes at the cross. He said yes when Jesus sat down. He said yes when He promised to remember your sins no more. You can walk forward today with your head held high. Not because you are without sin, but because your Savior has taken your sin away forever. That is worth believing. That is worth living.

Reflection Question

What would it look like for you to stop letting a past failure have the final word over your identity, and to let the finished work of Jesus speak louder instead?

Jesus, thank You that my past does not have the final word. You do. Help me to walk forward today in the freedom and identity You have given me, fully forgiven and fully Yours. Amen.

You Are Free

July 26th Sermon, Day 4

Forgiveness is not just about what happened in the past. It changes how you live right now, today. When you truly believe that your sins are forgiven, completely and permanently, something shifts. You stop living under the weight of shame. You stop performing for God's approval, because you already have it. You stop holding back from others, because you are no longer consumed with protecting yourself.

That is what freedom actually looks like. Free from shame. Free from striving. Free to love people generously. Free to serve joyfully, not out of obligation, but out of overflow. So many people know they are forgiven in their heads but have not let it reach their hearts. They still shrink back. They still feel like they have to earn their place. They still carry a weight that was lifted the moment they put their faith in Jesus. God does not love you because you have become perfect. He loves you because you have placed your faith in Jesus, who is perfect. That love is not waiting for you to get your act together. It is already yours. You are forgiven. That means you are free. Walk like it.

If you genuinely believed you were fully free from shame and the need to earn God's approval, how would that change the way you treat the people around you today?

Lord, let the truth of my forgiveness move from my head to my heart. Help me to live today as someone who is truly free, not striving, not hiding, but walking in the freedom You purchased for me. Amen.
