Trading In The Heavy Yoke
Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church
September 6th Sermon, Day 3
Most of us are not just carrying one burden. We are carrying several at once. The pressure to be perfect. The habit of comparing ourselves to others. The need to control outcomes. The exhausting work of keeping everyone around us happy. The quiet weight of guilt that never quite goes away. None of those yokes were designed for you. And yet, somehow, they end up on your shoulders anyway.
Jesus uses the image of a yoke on purpose. A yoke was built to join two together so they could move in the same direction, sharing the load. When He invites you to take His yoke, He is not adding to what you already carry. He is offering an exchange. His way of living for the crushing weight of all those other yokes. His way actually fits. It aligns with how you were created to live. That does not mean life becomes effortless, but it does mean you are no longer straining under a load that was never yours to carry. Today is a good day to ask yourself which yokes you have picked up that Jesus never asked you to wear. And then, one by one, lay them down. He is ready to make the trade.
Bible Verse
"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." - Matthew 11:29
Reflection Question
Which yoke, whether perfectionism, comparison, control, or guilt, has the tightest grip on you right now, and what would it look like to lay it down today?
Quote
"Our problem for most of us is that we put other yokes on ourselves. The yoke of perfection, of comparison, of control, of people pleasing, of guilt."
Prayer
Jesus, I confess that I have been carrying yokes You never placed on me. Help me to recognize them, release them, and trust that Your way is lighter and better than anything I have been holding onto.
