From Consumer to Contributor
Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church
September 20th Sermon, Day 2
It is easy to walk into a church service asking one simple question: what am I going to get out of this? It feels natural. We are busy, we are tired, and we come hoping to be filled up. But Scripture invites us into something richer than that. Hebrews 10:24 does not say, "Let us consider what we can receive." It says, "Let us consider how we may spur one another on."
The focus is outward. The posture is giving, not just getting. This is a significant shift. When you walk into a room thinking about what you can offer, rather than only what you can receive, everything changes. You notice the person sitting alone. You remember to ask how someone is really doing. You bring your whole self, not just your needs. This does not mean your needs do not matter. They absolutely do. But here is the beautiful thing about community: when everyone shows up to give, everyone ends up receiving. It works both ways. You have something to offer that no one else can. Your story, your faith, your presence. Do not underestimate what God can do through a simple act of showing up with an open heart and a willingness to encourage someone else.
Bible Verse
"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching." - Hebrews 10:24-25
Reflection Question
In your current season of life, are you more focused on what you can receive from your faith community or what you can contribute to it, and what might need to shift?
Quote
"We don't just come to church to receive something from God. We come to church to give something to one another."
Prayer
Father, move me from a posture of consuming to one of contributing. Show me who needs encouragement today and give me the courage to offer it. Amen.
