You Don’t Have to Do Everything
Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church
October 18th Sermon, Day 4
There is a tension that comes with caring about people in need. On one hand, you want to help. On the other hand, the needs around you can feel overwhelming. And if you are not careful, that feeling of being overwhelmed can quietly become an excuse to do nothing at all. Here is something freeing: you are not called to carry every burden. You cannot solve every problem, and God is not asking you to.
Wisdom is part of generosity. Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is connect someone with a resource, a person, or an organization that is better equipped to help them. But here is the other side of that truth. The fact that you cannot do everything is never a reason to do nothing. There is always something you can do. A kind word. A meal. A phone call. A prayer. A moment of your time. God is not asking for perfection. He is asking for willingness. He wants your heart to stay open even when the need feels bigger than your capacity. Start with what you have. Serve where you are. Love the person who is right in front of you. That is not a small thing. In God’s hands, it is often exactly enough.
Bible Verse
"If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them." - Deuteronomy 15:7
Reflection Question
Is there a need around you that you have been avoiding because it feels too big or too complicated? What is one small, specific step you could take this week?
Quote
"We shouldn’t use the fact that we can’t do everything as an excuse to do nothing."
Prayer
Lord, I cannot do everything, but I do not want that to become my reason for doing nothing. Show me the one thing You are asking of me today, and give me the courage to do it. Amen.
