Upside Down Greatness

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

October 25th Sermon, Day 2

James and John had a bold request. They wanted the two seats of highest honor in Jesus’ kingdom, one on His right and one on His left. It is easy to read that and think, how could they ask that? But honestly, their desire to be great is not so different from ours. We want to be noticed. We want our efforts to matter. We want to be recognized for what we contribute. That is a deeply human longing.

But Jesus flipped the whole idea of greatness on its head. In His kingdom, the path to greatness does not run through power or recognition. It runs through service. Humble, quiet, sometimes inconvenient service. He was not asking His followers to become doormats. He was inviting them into something far more meaningful. He was saying that the most significant thing you can do with your life is pour it out for others, not to be seen, but because people matter. That kind of greatness does not always get applause. It might not even get a thank you. But it reflects the heart of Jesus, and that is worth more than any seat of honor. You are invited today to pursue a different kind of greatness. One that looks like serving, not being served.

Bible Verse

"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." - Mark 10:45

Reflection Question

In what area of your life are you most tempted to seek recognition, and how might God be inviting you to serve there instead?

Quote

"Greatness, Jesus said, means serving. Greatness means putting someone else's needs above your desire to be noticed."

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for showing me what true greatness looks like. Help me to release my need for recognition and find joy in serving others the way You served me. Amen.
