Fix Your Eyes And Keep Going

August 9th Sermon, Day 5

We have made it to the end of the week, and here is the truth worth carrying with you: you do not have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep going. Paul closes this section of 2 Corinthians with a simple but powerful instruction. Fix your eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. What is visible is temporary. What is invisible is eternal. Faith is not ignoring reality. It is recognizing that there is more reality than we can currently see.

Jesus never promised the road would be easy. He promised to walk it with you. And that changes everything. So today, do not lose heart. Not because your circumstances have changed, but because God's grace has not. Not because the road is smooth, but because Jesus walks with you on that road. And not because suffering has disappeared, but because Sunday always follows Friday. The cross led to resurrection. Death gave way to life. Darkness gave way to light.

That same hope belongs to you. Keep carrying the treasure. Keep trusting Jesus. Keep loving the people around you, especially the ones who are hurting. Show up for them. A phone call, a meal, a prayer, a listening ear. Never underestimate the power of simply being present. You are not alone, and you will not lose heart.

Bible Verse

"So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." - 2 Corinthians 4:18

Reflection Question

What is one practical way you can shift your focus from your temporary circumstances to God's eternal perspective this week?

Quote

Not because you're strong, but because he is strong and you belong to him. Not because suffering's disappeared, but because God's grace hasn't disappeared. Not because the road is easy, but because Jesus walks with you on that road.

Prayer

Father, help me fix my eyes on You and not on the weight of what surrounds me. Thank You that Your grace never disappears and that Jesus walks with me every step of the way. Amen.

Roots Grown Deep

August 9th Sermon, Day 4

There is a reason trees that survive storms often have the deepest root systems. The resistance of the wind and the weight of the rain force the roots to push further down in search of stability. What looks like destruction from the outside is actually producing something stronger on the inside.

Paul understood this. He did not view his suffering as evidence that God had abandoned Him. He viewed it as something God was using to produce something eternal. He called his troubles light and momentary, not because they were painless, but because he was measuring them against something far greater. This is not toxic positivity. Paul was not telling people to smile through their pain and pretend everything is fine. He was inviting them to zoom out. To see their current season inside a much larger story.

A story that does not end with the hardship. God often does His deepest work on the inside when the outside is struggling. The season that feels like it is breaking you may actually be the season that roots you more deeply in Christ than anything else ever could. Do not be too quick to rush past the hard season. Ask God what He is growing in you through it. The roots being formed right now may be what holds you steady for everything that comes next.

Bible Verse

"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." - 2 Corinthians 4:17

Reflection Question

Looking back on a past difficulty, can you identify a way that season grew your faith or character in ways that a comfortable season might not have?

Quote

Suffering can, if we allow it, to drive our roots even deeper into Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Lord, when I am tempted to only see what I am losing in this hard season, help me trust that You are growing something in me that will last. Drive my roots deeper into You. Amen.

When Weakness Becomes A Window

August 9th Sermon, Day 3

Nobody signs up for suffering. We pray for healing, for open doors, for smooth paths. And there is nothing wrong with that. But what happens when the hard season does not lift as quickly as we hoped? Paul offers us a perspective that is both challenging and deeply freeing. He says that carrying the death of Jesus in our bodies is actually how the life of Jesus gets put on display. In other words, our struggles are not just obstacles to endure. They can become windows through which others see Christ.

Think about the people in your life who have shaped your faith the most. Chances are, at least one of them walked through something incredibly difficult and trusted God anyway. Their faith did not shine brightest when everything was easy. It shone brightest when everything was hard. That is the ministry of weakness. When you are struggling and still choosing to trust, people notice. Not because suffering is beautiful on its own, but because Jesus shining through it is. You may feel like your current season disqualifies you from being a light to others. But it may actually be your greatest opportunity. God does not waste a single tear. Not one sleepless night, not one whispered prayer through grief. He is working, even now.

Bible Verse

"We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body." - 2 Corinthians 4:10

Reflection Question

Can you think of a time when someone else's faith during suffering strengthened your own? What did their example teach you about God?

Quote

People oftentimes see Jesus most clearly in you and me when we trust Him during our suffering. It's not because the suffering is beautiful. It's only beautiful because Jesus shines through it.

Prayer

Jesus, I do not always understand why hard seasons last as long as they do. But I trust that You are working through them. Let my life be a window to Your grace, even in the struggle. Amen.

Hard Pressed But Not Crushed

August 9th Sermon, Day 2

Life can feel like it is closing in from every direction. Maybe you are dealing with a health scare, a broken relationship, financial pressure, or a grief that just will not lift. If that is where you are right now, you are in good company. Paul knew that feeling well. He was beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked, and constantly in danger. And yet he wrote some of the most hope-filled words in all of Scripture. He did not pretend the hard things were not hard. He named them honestly: hard pressed, perplexed, persecuted, struck down. But he refused to let those realities have the final word.

After every hardship, he declared a truth that suffering could not erase: not crushed, not in despair, not abandoned, not destroyed. That is not denial. That is faith. Faith does not pretend the pain is not real. It simply insists that God is more real than the pain. It holds both truths at the same time and chooses to anchor itself to the One who does not change. Whatever you are facing today, you are not crushed. You are not abandoned. God has not left the building. He is right there with you in the middle of it, and His presence changes everything.

Bible Verse

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." - 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Reflection Question

Which of Paul's four contrasts (hard pressed but not crushed, perplexed but not in despair, persecuted but not abandoned, struck down but not destroyed) speaks most directly to what you are walking through right now, and why?

Quote

Faith doesn't eliminate suffering, but faith changes how suffering affects us.

Prayer

Father, when life presses in from every side, remind me that Your presence is greater than my pressure. Help me hold onto hope even when I cannot see the way forward. Amen.

Ordinary Jars, Extraordinary Treasure

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

Sunday Rewind is a 5-day Devotional based on the weekly sermon at Resonate Community Church

August 9th Sermon, Day 1

Have you ever felt too ordinary, too broken, or too weak to be used by God? You are not alone. Most of us look at our lives and see the cracks, the limitations, the places where we feel like we simply do not measure up. But here is the beautiful truth: that is exactly where God does His best work.

Paul describes believers as jars of clay. In his day, clay jars were common, cheap, and fragile. Nobody displayed them in a place of honor. They were everyday containers. And yet Paul says God intentionally places His most priceless treasure, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, inside people just like you and me. Why would God do that? So that when people see something extraordinary coming from an ordinary life, they know the power belongs to Him and not to us.

You do not have to be impressive. You do not have to have it all together. God is not looking for perfect containers. He is looking for willing ones. Your weakness is not a disqualifier. It is actually an invitation for His strength to show up in ways that leave no doubt about who deserves the credit. You carry something priceless inside you. Not because of who you are, but because of Whose you are.

Bible Verse

"But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." - 2 Corinthians 4:7

Reflection Question

In what area of your life have you been waiting to feel "good enough" before letting God use you?

Quote

God intentionally places His priceless good news, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, inside ordinary people like you and me. So everybody knows the power of Jesus Christ is about Him and not about us.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for choosing ordinary people to carry Your extraordinary message. Help me stop waiting to feel worthy and simply trust that Your power is enough. Amen.
